Trouble continues for Eddie Long following a sex scandal involving four young men, and a lawsuit against him for a Ponzi scheme gone bad.
Now the “New Birth” pastor’s church is back in the headlines—this time, amid confirmed reports of its Christian academy shutting down. Faith Community Christian Academy, which originally opened its doors in 1993 as “New Birth Christian Academy,” once boasted more than 200 enrollees.
But after enrollment dwindled down to about 40, making it impossible to sustain the school financially and keep its doors open, school officials could do nothing to save it.
Although those within the church say they do not believe the Christian academy’s decline is related to Bishop Long’s sex abuse allegations, the downward spiral began not long after.
The school, located on New Birth’s Lithonia campus, suddenly shut its doors in January 2012 citing economic troubles. But then, it quickly reopened the Christian academy with assistance gained from a new partnership with a local private entity called the Aurora Schools.
Since this will be the last semester of operation, "FCCA will assist parents in any way that it can to make this an easy transition for all families involved," said officials in a statement. -
