Al Sharpton Questions Menthol Cigarette Ban

The Reverend Al Sharpton is asking the Biden administration to reconsider its plan to ban menthol cigarettes. Sharpton's National Action Network sent a letter to the Food and Drug Administration citing Eric Garner, a Black man who died in 2014 after a New York City police officer put him in an illegal chokehold. The officer had been trying to arrest Garner for selling untaxed loose cigarettes. The letter said that banning menthol cigarettes would create illegal markets and more police interactions, particularly in minority communities. It also questioned the ban on menthols, disproportionately preferred by Black smokers.
